Credit Card Rakings for January 2011

Discover More No Balance Transfer Fee Credit CardHere are the credit card rankings for January 2011. These rankings are based on the cards we recommend here on www.BalanceTransfer.cc. As always, these rank are based on both the volume of applications, and approvals. Here's the list:

  1. The Discover® More No Balance Transfer Fee Card (click here)

  2. Discover More Card - 24 Month Promotional Balance Transfer Card (click here)

  3. The Classic Discover More Card (click here)

  4. Slate from Chase (click here)

  5. The Chase Freedom® MasterCard® with $100 Bonus Cash Back (click here)

  6. The Chase Freedom® Visa® with $100 Bonus Cash Back (click here)

Not surprisingly, Discover's No Balance Transfer Fee card, and its 24 Month Promotional Balance Transfer card, were extremely popular last month, as these two cards are easily the best 0% credit cards in the United States right now. Here what these two cards are currently offering:

Discover® More No Balance Transfer Fee Card
  • 0% Intro APR on transferred balances for 12 months.
  • 0% Intro APR on new purchases for 12 months.
  • No balance transfer fee
  • No Annual Fee

Discover More Card - 24 Month Promotional Balance Transfer Card
  • 0% Intro APR on transferred balances for 24 months.
  • 0% Intro APR on new purchases for 6 months.
  • Balance transfer fee: 5% of each transfer made, with a minimum transfer fee of $10.
  • No Annual Fee
Moreover, both of the above cards come with Discover's industry leading cashback rewards program.

If you want to take advantage of the best 0% credit cards in the market right now, you have until the end of February to do so. Discover plans to shelve both cards on February 28, 2011.

The Classic Discover More card is still popular, because it's still offering a lot of value:

Classic Discover More Card
  • 0% Intro APR on transferred balances for 12 months.
  • 0% Intro APR on new purchases for 18 months.
  • Balance transfer fee: 4% of each transfer made.
  • No Annual Fee
And, of course, excellent cashback rewards.

The Blue from American Express® and Blue Cash® from American Express cards both generated a lot of interest from visitors to this site in January. Unfortunately, however, Amex approved a small fraction of the applications generated here at www.BalanceTransfer.cc. We're hoping Amex approvals improve over time, and they should as the economy continues to heal and the jobs picture gets better. But, for now, it's best to try one of the 3 top Discover cards from our January rankings above. Though American Express offers the best customer service around, Discover's customer service record is also very good. Bottom line: If you're attracted to the Blue from American Express or Blue Cash from American Express cards because they offer 0% intro APR on purchases for 12 months, you'd probably be better off going with one of the Discover cards discussed above, because your application has a better chance of getting that stamp of approval.

As always, your comments are very welcome.

Credit Card Rakings for August

Discover More Black CardHere are the August credit card rankings for the cards we recommend here on www.BalanceTransfer.cc. As always, these rank are based on both the volume of applications, and approvals. This list is important because it gives credit consumers a good read on which banks are approving applications, and which banks are offering the most attractive credit card offers. Bottom line: no one wants to signup for an unpopular credit card deal, and no one likes it when a credit application is denied. Popular cards are popular for a reason, as smart card shoppers always go for the best possible deal. Here's the list:

  1. The Discover® More Black Card (click here)

  2. Discover More Card with $75 CashBack Bonus (click here)

  3. The Discover More Card (click here)

  4. The Discover More Biodegradable Card (click here)

  5. The Chase Freedom® Visa with $100 Bonus Cash Back (click here)

  6. Blue from American Express® (click here)

  7. Chase Freedom Credit Card (click here)

  8. Blue Cash® from American Express (click here)

  9. Chase Sapphire® Card (click here)

  10. Chase Freedom Visa with $50 Bonus Cash Back (click here)
It's no surprise that the Discover More Black Card is still #1. It offers the best 0% intro APR deal (12 months), as well 0% intro APR on new purchases for 9 months. And, as always, Discover offers the most generous cashback bonus of all the cards we recommend.

We really like American Express cards, as the customer service is truly excellent and the terms are invariably consumer-friendly. However, Amex has been quite stingy with approving applications lately, and that's why only 2 Amex cards made our list this month.

The Chase Freedom® Visa with $100 Bonus Cash Back Card has been climbing the list, as savvy card shoppers have been keen to take advantage of the bonus cash.

Thanks much for stopping by and reading. Stay tuned for next month's list.

Credit Card Rankings for September, 2007

Here are the popularity rankings for the cards we recommend here at www.FedPrimeRate.com for September, 2007:

Credit Card Rankings
Credit Card Rankings

The above-listed rankings are based on both applications and approvals that originated from this website.

The top 4 cards in the list offered 0% intro APR on introductory balance transfers, in conjunction with the option to make your first balance transfer for free (no balance transfer transaction fee.) All are great cards, but be warned that the Citi® AT + T Universal Saving and Rewards card now charges a fee for the initial balance transfer.

The American Express® Blue card, number 5 on the list, is still quite popular, as the card still offers 0% intro APR on new credit card purchases for the first 15 months.

That's it for now. Stay tuned for the latest news.

Here are the popularity rankings for the cards we recommend here at www.FedPrimeRate.com for July, 2007:

Credit Card Popularity Rankings
Credit Card Popularity Rankings

The above-listed rankings are based on both applications and approvals that originated from this website.

As predicted here last month, the Citi® Upromise® Platinum Select® MasterCard® has snatched the #1 position. Citi also has the #2 position this month, with the AT&T Universal Rewards card. Both cards offered 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 12 months, with no fee charged for the initial balance transfer, during the month of July. But the Citi Upromise card just started charging a fee for transferring balances, so the card may not be as popular next month. I'm thinking that one of the following will be #1 next month:

  • The Citi Home Rebate Platinum Select Card
  • The Citi AT + T Universal Rewards Card
  • The Citi Driver's Edge Platinum Select MasterCard

All 3 cards have a great rewards, and, currently, all 3 offer 0% intro APR on balance transfers for one year, with no fee charged for the initial balance transfer.

That's it for now. Thanks for stopping by.

Credit Card Rankings for June, 2007

Here are the popularity rankings for the cards we recommend here at www.FedPrimeRate.com for June, 2007:

Credit Card Rankings
Credit Card Rankings

The above-listed rankings are based on both applications and approvals that originated from this website.

The Discover More family of credit cards retained the #1 spot last month, even though Discover recently added a fee for transferring credit card balances to any Discover More card. Balance transfer fees can be quite the buzzkill, but with Discover More, the balance transfer fee is capped at $75, so transferring a balance is still worth it if the transferred balance is a significant sum. The Discover More cards are still attractive because the 0% intro APR period for both new purchases and transferred balances is still 12 months, while many other competing credit cards only offer an interest-free period of 6 months.

If I was a betting man, I would bet that the Citi® Upromise® card will capture the #1 spot this month (July.) Why? Great rewards (the easier it is to save for your kids' college education, the better!), no balance transfer fee and a 0% intro APR for 12 months on transferred balances. Stay tuned for next month's report!

Credit Card Rankings for May, 2007

Here are the popularity rankings for the cards we recommend here at www.FedPrimeRate.com for May, 2007:

Credit Card Popularity Rankings for the www.BalanceTransfer.cc website for May, 2007

The above-listed rankings are based on both applications and approvals that originated from this website.

The Discover More family of credit cards is still the top choice at this website, but the Citi® Upromise® , the Citi Home Rebate Platinum Select MasterCard® or the Citi Driver's Edge® Platinum Select® credit card may soon steal the #1 spot away from Discover, because with these three Citi cards, you can still transfer a credit card balance from a non-Citi credit card, pay no interests on the transferred balance for 12 months, and pay no balance transfer transaction fee. The Discover More cards still offer good value, but you now have to pay a transaction fee to transfer balances to any Discover More card.

The American Express® Blue card is still quite popular, as the card still offers a highly attractive 0% Intro APR on new credit card purchases for 15 months.

Just a reminder: the above rankings are based on both applications and approvals for the credit cards we recommend at this website. The information can be very useful for anyone shopping for a credit card.

The Discover Platinum card once again tops the lists, which is no surprise considering the benefits.

The Citi® Upromise® card is likely to become a lot more popular in the coming months, not only because using the card is a great way to start saving for college, but also because you can now transfer your non-Citi credit card balances to the Citi Upromise card and pay no interest on the transferred balance for 12 months, with no balance transfer fee. Good stuff!

Credit Card Popularity Rankings for February, 2007

Here are the popularity rankings for the cards we recommend here at www.FedPrimeRate.com for February, 2007:

Credit Card Rankings
Credit Card Rankings

The Discover Platinum card does it again, with the combined varieties taking the number one spot.

On a personal note, the number of credit card solicitations I'm getting in the mail has spiked in a serious way; probably has something to do with the fact that my credit score recently jumped into the 790+ zone. Most of these offers are very tempting, from 0% intro APR for 18 months, to 0.79, 1.99, 2.99, 3.99 and 5.99 from 6 to 12 months. Even though my zero APR surfing days are just about over, and opting out of receiving solicitations is really not that difficult, I still like to receive these offers, just in case I decide to keep some extra cash in the bank and transfer my business credit card debt to a zero percent offer at some point.

It's really all that waste that bothers me. All that paper. These days, I need to empty my paper shredder on a daily basis, because I'm shedding so much unsolicited mail. And I'm not even getting all of it: I still have a rather large mound of stuff I need to shred on my second desk, and it's slowly growing larger. I need to take a small vacation just so I can get rid of all of it. Of course, I can't just throw it out without shredding it, because most of these solicitations contain my some of my personal info, you know: the stuff the identity thieves look for.

I paid close to $4,000 yesterday to get rid of my personal credit card debt. Letting go of that much cash wasn't easy, but it was the right thing to do. I could very easily qualify for another great 0% offer right now, but I've been surfing 0% offers for years, and it's starting to feel like I'm using them as a crutch: being in debt is still being in debt, even if you're not paying any interest on it. I may buy a home soon, so being debt free when I'm ready to get my own place would be optimal.

Don't get me wrong: I don't regret surfing zero percent offers at all, not for one second. In fact, I recommend 0% offers to everyone and anyone I know -- well, to clarify, anyone who has a great credit score and who doesn't have problems keeping up with bills. It's important to remember that credit card debt is unsecured, so even if -- God forbid -- you make a mistake, no one will come and take your house or car away from you. And even the worst credit score can be repaired with time and patience (writing from experience here!)

Credit Card Popularity Rankings for January, 2007

For your viewing pleasure, the following table lists the credit card popularity rankings for the cards we recommend here at www.FedPrimeRate.com:

Credit Card Rankings
Credit Card Rankings

Yup, the Discover Platinum card does it again: the combined varieties of the Discover Platinum card top the list for January.

Since the Discover Platinum card is so popular, we decided to add two more Discover credit cards to the website: the Discover Gas Card and the Discover Miles Card.

The Discover Gas Card offers excellent rewards for those who find themselves at the pump a lot (you get 5% cashback on gas and car maintenance purchases), while the Mile Card features some highly competitive travel rewards (12,000 bonus miles; fly any airline, any seat and no blackout dates.)

OK, now what I really like about the Discover Gas and Miles cards is that they offer the same excellent benefits as the Discover Platinum card, i.e. zero percent intro APR on new purchases and balance transfers for one year, no balance transfer fee and no annual fee.

My Balance Transfer Surfing Days Are Almost Over

By March of this year, I will have paid off all my personal credit card debt, so my career as a credit card balance transfer surfer is almost over. I plan on buying my own home (and getting a fantastic interest rate, if I have to take out a mortgage) in about two years, so I want to make sure that my credit rating is stellar before I take the plunge. That means I have to have very little or no credit card debt by the time I'm ready to buy. I'm shooting for a FICO® credit score in the 850 range by 2009: wish me luck!

I may transfer my business credit card debt to a new or existing business card that's offering a great 0% deal, but I doubt it. I'm getting tired of having credit card debt, and I want to be rid of both my personal and business credit card debt by the end of 2007.

Once my credit card debt is paid, I'm going to cut up my cards so that I won't have to worry about losing them, but I'll keep the actual accounts open so as to keep my credit score healthy (as credit card accounts age, they help to improve your credit score -- as long as you keep your accounts in good standing, of course.)

I'll miss the game -- no doubt -- but I'll still contribute to this website on a regular basis. There are lots of great 0% credit cards out there that other websites aren't talking about (like the Pulaski Bank Visa/Mastercard and the American Express IN:Rewards cards) so The Web still need someone like me to sniff out all the latest and greatest deals. So stay tuned, and happy surfing.

Credit Card Approval Rankings for December, 2006

Credit Card
Credit Card
With the holidays behind us, many folks are now a bit heavier from all that festive feasting. But, on the positive side, many of us have more cool stuff to play with: cars, computers, iPods, plasma TV's, etc.

Of course, there's also the hangover that kicks in when that credit card statement arrives in the mail. Fortunately, for those with at least decent credit, there's are still lots of fantastic zero percent intro APR credit card deals to choose from.

As you might have guessed, December was a busy month for the www.FedPrimeRate.com website. Here are the application approval rankings for December (we decided to display rankings instead of raw numbers this time, since rankings are more intuitive):

Credit Card Rank
Discover® Platinum Card
(Combined Varieties)
1
Citi® Driver's Edge®
Platinum Select® Card
2
Chase Platinum Visa® 3
Citi Home Rebate
Platinum Select® MasterCard®
4
Citi® Diamond Preferred® Rewards Card 5
Citi® Platinum Select® Card 6
Citi® Upromise® Card 7
Blue from American Express® 8
Citi PremierPass(SM) Card 9
Blue CashSM from American Express® 10
Sony CardSM from Chase 11
Hilton HHonors Platinum Credit Card
from American Express
12
American Express® IN:LA(SM) Card 13
Starbucks Card Duetto™ Visa®
from Chase
14
Chase Flexible Rewards
Platinum Visa®
15

As was the case in November, 2006, the Discover Platinum credit card (combined varieties) was the most popular choice for website visitors last month. Why is Discover Platinum so popular? Because Discover Platinum is still the best 0% intro APR credit card, plain and simple.

It's important to note (in case you've been wondering) that all varieties of the Discover Platinum consumer credit card have the same benefits. The only difference between one variety of the Discover Platinum consumer credit card and the next is the card art.

Since Discover Platinum is so popular, we've decided to add 2 more versions to this website, because everyone likes the idea of having plenty of choice, n'est-ce pas? So now, when it comes to the Discover Platinum card, you can choose from the following:

  • Discover® Platinum American Flag Card
  • Discover® Platinum Card
  • Discover® Platinum Wildlife Card
  • Discover® Platinum Sealife Card
  • Discover® Platinum Clear Card

Discover Financial Services Is Being Sold

The Discover Platinum card is issued by Discover Financial Services (DFS), and DFS is owned by the investment bank Morgan Stanley. The word on the street (Wall Street, that is) is that Morgan Stanley wants to sell DFS. This news begs the question: if DFS is sold, will the new management change the features and benefits associated with the popular Discover Platinum card? I'm hoping the answer is no. Only time will tell.

Application Approval Numbers for November, 2006

Here are the November, 2006 application approval numbers for the credit card offers we have listed here at the www.FedPrimeRate.com website:

Discover® Platinum American Flag Card 20
Discover® Platinum Wildlife Card 16
Discover® Platinum Card 8
Citi® Driver's Edge® Platinum Select® Card 8
Chase Platinum Visa® 5
Citi® Home Rebate Platinum Select® MasterCard® 4
Citi® Diamond Preferred® Rewards Card 4
Chase Business Rebate Card 2
Chase Flexible Rewards Platinum Visa® 2
Blue from American Express® 2
Blue Cash from American Express® 2
Citi® Platinum Select® Card 1
Citi® Upromise® Card 1
Sony Card from Chase 1

Credit Cards
Credit Cards
For November, and for the first time ever, the 3 varieties of the Discover Platinum card have taken the number 1, 2 and 3 spots. The total number of Discover Platinum approvals last month was 44. Website visitors are obviously attracted to the Discover Platinum card. After all, who can resist a credit card deal with a 12 month, zero percent introductory annual percentage rate (APR) on both balance transfers and new credit card purchases, with no annual membership fee and no fee (as in free) for transferring balances. Another reason why we don't hesitate to recommend the Discover Platinum card: the ratio between applications and approvals is strong, and we very much want the visitors to this website to have a positive experience with the credit cards we recommend. We all know (well, most middle class consumers, anyway) how vexing a rejected credit card application can be; it's also important to remember that each and every rejected application is registered on your credit report, and a rejection can adversely affect your credit rating.

The Discover Platinum card will probably be the number one choice this month (December) as well, as long as the card's features and benefits remain as they are now (Discover Financial Services is owned by the investment bank Morgan Stanley, in case you want to invest!)

Citibank's Driver's Edge Platinum Select Card and Home Rebate Platinum Select MasterCard are gaining in popularity. You can transfer your balance(s) at 0% for 12 months with both, and you won't have to pay a balance transfer fee or an annual membership fee. But you'll have to stay disciplined about purchases, because the zero percent deal is only for transferred balances, not new credit card purchases.

Improve Your Credit Score with 0% Intro APR Business Credit Card Offers

We all love no fee balance transfer offers, right? Well, we've recently discovered that Citibank has a few business credit cards where you can transfer your balances at 0%, and pay no balance transfer fees. Check out these offers:

  • The CitiBusiness Card

--0% Intro APR on balance transfers and new credit card purchases for 12 months
    --No balance transfer fee
    --No annual membership fee
    --HOT!
  • The CitiBusiness Card with ThankYou Network

--0% Intro APR on balance transfers for 12 months
    --No balance transfer fee
    --No annual membership fee
  • The Citi Professional Card

--0% Intro APR on balance transfers for 9 months
    --No balance transfer fee
    --No annual membership fee
  • The CitiBusiness PremierPass Business Credit Card

--0% Intro APR on balance transfers for 12 months
    --No balance transfer fee
--Annual fee: $0 for 12 months, then $75 per year
So how can you use the above-listed business credit cards -- or any business credit card for that matter -- to easily and legally improve your credit score? By transferring the balance from a consumer credit card to a business credit card.

You are probably very familiar with how 0% balance transfers work. If not, here's a simplified step-by-step:

  • You find a credit card offer with an attractive 0% balance transfer deal associated with it.
  • You apply for a new credit card and request to transfer one or more credit card balances from one or more credit card accounts you already have open.
  • If the new credit card application is accepted and the bank / credit card company has approved your balance transfer requests, they will send a check to your current credit card company to payoff your balance.
  • Your old credit card account remains open (of course, you have the option to cancel it once the transfer goes through, but keeping old accounts open is most often beneficial for your credit score.)
  • In the end, your new credit card -- the account to which you transferred your balance(s) -- will have a balance equal to the balance transfer amount your requested.

When you use a 0% balance transfer offer to transfer a balance from one consumer credit card to another consumer card, the credit reporting agencies register this as a transfer of debt. Under certain circumstances, your credit score may show a small increase as a result of the transfer, but more often than not, it doesn't.

On the other hand, if you were to transfer a balance from a consumer credit card to a business credit card, it would look like you paid your consumer credit card balance with cash, and would give your credit score a nice boost. That's because any balance on a business credit card account is considered business debt, not personal debt, and business debt isn't mixed with personal debt by the 3 credit bureaus (Transunion, Experian and Equifax -- see caveat below!) Business credit card debt is considered business debt even if you submit your personal Social Security number when you apply for a business card. As far as the credit reporting agencies are concerned, business credit card debt is oil, and consumer credit card debt is water.

Important caveat: for the above to work, your business needs to have an established credit history. If your business doesn't have an established credit history, then your personal and business finances are mixed together until a solid credit rating has been established for your business, a process that can take 2-3 years or more, depending on your spending profile.

If you have a business, or if you're planning on starting one, we highly recommend taking advantage of the above-listed feeless balance transfer offers, especially because there's no way of knowing if or when Citibank will change the features, benefits, terms and conditions associated with these offers.

Of course, if you already have a non-Citibank business credit card, and you're paying interest on your outstanding balance, you may want to consider using one of the hot Citibank offers listed above, to save on interest charges.

Credit Cards
Credit Cards
Once again -- and as we predicted last month -- the Discover Platinum credit card was number one for successful credit card applications that originated here at www.FedPrimeRate.com for the month of October, with a combined total of 20. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand the reason for the continued dominance of the Discover Platinum card: Discover Platinum is still offering a 0% annual percentage rate (APR) on both new credit card purchases and balance transfers for 12 months, with no balance transfer fee; quite easily one of the sweetest balance transfer deals on the Internet right now. Of course, the folks at Discover can modify the terms and features of their credit card offers at any time, but I'm willing to bet -- and I'm just guessing here, I don't work for Discover -- that they won't remove the "free-free with no fee" features any time soon. It's an aggressive tactic that's obviously working well for them, and it's also helping lots of people save on interest charges.

The Christmas shopping season is about to start: who wants to pay interest on all that stuff?

In other news, Citibank (Citi) has resurrected the Citi® Platinum Select® Card, and we are glad to see that this card has been reactivated. With the Citi Platinum Select Card, there's a nominal fee for transferring balances -- 3% of the amount of each balance transfer, $5 minimum, $250 maximum -- but on the positive side, this card is currently offering a 0% APR on both transferred balances and new purchases for 12 months.

I actually carry a Citi Platinum Select credit card in my wallet and I've been very happy with it over the years. The folks at Citibank just increased the credit limit on my card by a substantial amount, which in turn should improve my credit rating because my balance will end up being a smaller fraction of my overall credit limit. I just love it when I get a credit limit increase without asking for it. It's kinda' like getting a raise from your boss without asking for one. Sweet!

Before I signoff today, I just want to add a quick congrats to the folks at Bank of America for implementing the best automatic payments system I've experienced to date. When I setup automatic payments for my Bank of America business credit card, the system gave me the option to:

"schedule the payment to be made on the earliest available date after the e-Bill is received."
So I just picked a dollar amount that was about three times my minimum due, and now the system automatically deducts that amount from my checking account just as soon as a new payment comes due. So I don't have to worry about scheduling anything anymore. In fact, I could be in a coma (God forbid!) for a year, and the Bank of America system will keep my account in good standing for me. Good stuff!

Ok, I know what you're thinking, and: yes, other credit card companies and banks offer automatic payments. But, in my experience, they only offer the option to pay either the minimum amount due or the statement balance. Minimum amount due is no good for me because, if I choose that, it will take forever to pay the balance down to zero. And the statement balance option is no good for me either, because that amount is often beyond that which my budget will allow. And, yes: with other banks, I can schedule my preferred payment amount, but scheduling is not the same as automatic. With automatic, it's completely automated. With scheduling, I have to login to my account and spend much time setting up each payment; bad news for my encroaching carpal tunnel syndrome.

We're living in the era of Universal Default and late fees of $39 or more, and it's the specter of those harsh penalties that's prompted me to use both payment scheduling and automatic payments to stay out of trouble. Yup.

That's it for now. More news from the world of zero percent credit card balance transfers will be added here shortly. Stay tuned!

Application Approval Numbers for September, 2006

Credit Cards
Credit Cards
The folks who visit us here at www.FedPrimeRate.com are invariably looking for the best zero percent introductory annual percentage rate (APR) credit card offers, for both purchases and credit card balance transfers. However, for many visitors, it's not as simple as that: credit card deal hunters often want to know which credit card companies have the highest approval ratios, because many credit consumers understand that banks and credit card companies aren't always consistent with their application approval ratios (for various reasons), and it's always a good idea to minimize the risk of having a credit card application rejected.

So, as a service to our visitors, we are starting a new tradition: from now on, and on a monthly basis, we will post the raw approval numbers for the various credit cards listed here at www.FedPrimeRate.com; here are the numbers for September, 2006:

American Express® Blue

2
Chase Platinum Visa®

Citi® Upromise® Card

Discover® Platinum American Flag Card

The Citi® Upromise® Card is starting to gain in popularity, which is no surprise really: it's a great rewards credit card that helps families to save for college when cardholders shop for things like gasoline, clothing, home electronics and more.

As usual, Discover Card leads the pack, with a total of 9 approvals last month for the 3 varieties of their Platinum Card. Discover's popularity comes as no surprise: the interest-free period on transferred credit card balances for all Discover cards we have listed on this site is -- and always has been -- at least 12 months. A year long holiday from paying interest on credit card debt: good stuff! Discover credit cards are also highly attractive because most offer a 0% introductory APR on new purchases for 12 months to boot. It won't surprise us one bit if Discover ends up leading the pack next month as well. Stay tuned!
